Smart launched its Car2Go Scheme at the Detroit Motor Show recently, which gives those who can’t justify purchasing their own car the convenience of being able to quickly, and easily access a car.
This novel idea, which was first launched in Berlin, allows customers to reserve a Smart Fortwo car at a moment’s notice from the internet, a mobile phone, or in passing by using an electronic chip and pin card that is given to the customer when they create an account. This card is preloaded with credits that buy time behind the wheel in minute long blocks.
Drivers will then be given the location of their nearest available Smart Fortwo Car2go vehicle, which will unlock as soon as you hold your member card up to the card reader on the windscreen.
Once you are inside your car, you enter your pin number and away you go. There are no limits as to how far the car can be driven, and when you arrive at your destination, simply park the Car2go back within the area of coverage and the Car2go team takes car of the rest.
With refuelling, cleaning and all other services included in the affordable rental price, this offers a comfortable, efficient way of getting you where you want to go.
Although this system is not yet available in the UK, Mercedes-Benz say they are looking at a way of bringing it to London sometime in the future.
