Despite plenty of rumours and anticipation of its unveiling prior to the Detroit Motor Show, there was an element of confusion over the very subdued reveal of Chrysler-owned Fiat’s 500 BEV electric concept. There was no press event. The car was kept fairly clear of onlookers behind barricade rails. And there was no other information available about the car. But it did look very cool with its grey finish and sitting low on magnesium wheels
Apparently Chrysler built the Fiat 500 BEV to see how to package their electric powertrain technology into such a small car. If it was to hit production, it is likely to go head-to-head with the Mini E and is expected to manage 150 miles on a single charge thanks to 5,000 battery cells.
These batteries would be fully charged after 10 hours on a normal 240V household power supply or around 5 hours on a special high-power three-phase supply, with a regenerative braking system contributing power back in to the batteries to extend range. Unfortunately the weight of the car will obviously compromise the handling and performance, but new aerodynamics would still help get the 500 BEV from 0-62mph in about 10 seconds and on to 90 mph.
