Audi Baby R8

Audi surprised the motoring world in Detroit this week by unveiling the e-tron Mk2, a little brother for the R8 derived e-tron shown at Frankfurt a few months ago. And it’s a stunner!

This zero emissions model is 33cm smaller than the e-tron and is shorter than a TT. The Mk2 is also 250kg lighter than the Mk1 thanks to an aluminium space frame chassis and carbon fibre reinforced plastic body panels. At 1,350kg, this will be the lightest car in Audi’s line-up.

The new car is powered by the same sort of electric motors as the Mk1, but rather than one on each wheel, the Mk2 uses just two to drive the rear wheels. But with 204bhp on tap, performance is still pretty good with the 0-62mph run possible in under 6 seconds and a limited top speed of 124mph.

The e-tron Mk2’s batteries can be charged in as little as two hours from a high voltage 400V supply and allow a max range of 155 miles, with the limited top speed helping to preserve the batteries’ stored energy.

The Audi e-tron Mk2 is expected to go on sale in a couple of years and will be positioned below the £100,000 Mk1 putting it firmly in Porsche territory.
